Under normal circumstances there is little or no chance for fire hazards in tumble dryers. But procedural lapses on the part of users may lead to fire hazards. Consumers should note that any machine, let alone tumble dryers is prone to hazards one way or another, if not used properly. In the case of tumble dryers isolated cases of fire accidents have been reported.
It is therefore necessary to exercise caution while using the machine. Like all other machines which utilizes or produce energy and heat, safety of the user should have priority. Negligence and carelessness while operating the machine on the part of users may cause irreparable injuries or losses. The following guidelines will be helpful to the users of tumble dryers:
1.The users should keep the machine clean always. Periodically clean the interiors to remove accumulated sludge or fluffs, which will get collected at the bottom of the dryer. In the course of time such sledge will become dry and inflammable and it will get entangled near the heating elements. It is then a potential cause for fire hazards.
2.Ensure that the electrical installations are foolproof. Loose contacts or dangerously exposed live wires are also potential sources for fire hazards and electrocution.
3.The users should never overload the tumble dryer. Heavy items like duvets, sleeping bags and blankets should not be loaded in the machine.
4.In the case of vented tumble dryers, the hose pipes which takes out hot and humid air should be provided with grills and one way flaps to prevent air and fluffy materials from outside blown back to the system. In the case of vented type of tumble dryers, the users should ensure that the hosepipes are not twisted or bent.
5.The users should never leave tumble dryers unattended when it is switched on. In case the users notice smoke or burnt smell, the machine should be switched off immediately. Monitoring the process is necessary. In modern sophisticated tumble dryers sensors are provided to stop the machines automatically in case of any eventuality.
6.The users should also take care to clean the filters regularly. Torn or damaged filters should be replaced to prevent sludge or fluffs from getting into the system.
7.Tumble dryers should be placed in well ventilated rooms with sufficient space for users to move about. Cramped rooms should be avoided.
Risks of fire hazards are remote in the latest models of tumble dryers. They are provided with sensors and timers which will alert the users in case of problems during the operation of the machine. Further in the condenser type tumble dryers steam is circulated through the wet clothes, a feature which can reduce the risks considerably.
Modern machines have electronic controls to monitor and regulate temperature levels. However the users have to adhere to the safety precautions suggested by the manufactures as detailed in the manuals. Under no circumstance the users should ignore the operating instructions. They will not be entitled for warranty benefits if the safety regulations and practices are ignored or violated.
